iPod turns one
October 23, 2002 - 03:00 PDT
by Larry Angell - One year ago today, Apple introduced iPod to the world. At a special media event on October 23, 2001, Apple CEO Steve Jobs debuted what many now call the best digital music player in the world. The iPod has had a wild ride in such a short time. It won numerous awards and garnered glowing reviews from the Wall Street Journal, Forbes, c|net, Time, MP3.com, Fortune, PC Magazine, and a host of others.
The iPod found friends with celebrities, such as Moby, Trent Reznor, Shaquille O'neil, and Beck. It got 10GB and 20GB brothers, became Windows compatible, was toned-down for the French, and was an accomplice in stealing software. It has been given away with motorcycles, spawned clones, and been the basis for several Web sites. DJs switched to using iPods instead of vinyl, while students hosted iPod Breakout contests. Users connected their iPods to car and home stereos, engraved it, viewed their contacts, calendars, and even weather and news on it. To many, the iPod was more than an MP3 player this year; it was their best friend.
