Mozilla going on a diet
April 3, 2003 - 00:16 PST   Open-source Web browser development group Mozilla.org said in a new roadmap released Wednesday that its next build would be based on its Phoenix application -- a smaller, faster version of its own product. "The idea behind the switch is to slim down the main Mozilla code, which critics and participants alike have judged to be too big and too slow," notes c|net. "Under the new plan, the basic code will come with fewer bells and whistles, but will include a way of adding on features as needed." Mozilla.org also vowed continued support for the Mac: "We aim to ensure that Mozilla's cross-platform applications and toolkit remain both cross-platform and viable as applications that people actually use. And we need the same kind of embedded Gecko test coverage on the Mac that we get on other platforms. So, when we switch the default-built browser to Phoenix, we will provide daily and milestone builds of it for OS X."  [ Email this story ]
