X Microsoft discontinues IE for Mac development
June 13, 2003 - 13:50 PDT   Roz Ho, general manager of Microsoft's Macintosh Business Unit, has confirmed that no future versions of Internet Explorer will be released for the Mac, according to MacUser UK. Ho said the decision was made to make way for Apple's Safari Web browser. "Some of the key customer requests for Web browsing on the Mac require close development between the browser and the OS, something to which only Apple has access," she said. In May, Microsoft said that it was phasing out standalone versions of IE for Windows. "As part of the OS (operating system), IE will continue to evolve, but there will be no future standalone installations. IE6 SP1 is the final standalone installation," said IE program manager Brian Countryman in an interview posted on the software giant's Web site.  [ Email this story ]
