Sculley named 'Honorary President' of Newton group
July 20, 2004 - 11:32 PDT
Former Apple CEO John Sculley has been named "Honorary President" of the Worldwide Newton Association, which was founded in April to promote the Newton computing platform and to gather together Newton users from around the world. Its first main activity was to organize the Worldwide Newton Conference, which takes place in Paris Sept. 4-5.
Sculley was a president of Pepsi Cola USA until he was appointed president and CEO of Apple in 1983 (and stayed on for 10 years). During his time at Apple, he described a new device called the Knowledge Navigator. The Knowledge Navigator was perceived to be a device that could access a large networked database of hypertext information and use software agents to assist searching through that information. Apple produced several concept videos showcasing the idea and subsequently became the foundation for the Newton project, Apple's personal digital assistant (PDA).
