Mac OS X Tiger on April 29

Apple today announced that Mac OS X 10.4 Tiger will go on sale Friday, April 29, beginning at 6:00 p.m. during special events at Apple's retail stores and Apple Authorized Resellers. Tiger has more than 200 new features including Spotlight, Apple's new desktop search technology that lets users instantly find anything stored on their Mac, including documents, emails, contacts and images; and Dashboard, a new way to instantly access information like weather forecasts and stock quotes, using a new class of applications called widgets. "Mac OS X Tiger is the most innovative and secure desktop operating system ever created," said Steve Jobs, Apple's CEO. "Tiger's groundbreaking new features like Spotlight and Dashboard will change the way people use their computers, and drive our competitors nuts trying to copy them."
Tiger will is priced at $129 for a single user license. Visitors to the online Apple Store can pre-order copies of Tiger beginning today for deliver on or before April 29. The Mac OS X Tiger Family Pack is a single-residence, five-user license that will be available for a suggested retail price of $199. The Mac OS Up-To-Date upgrade package is available to all customers who purchase a qualifying new Mac from Apple or an Apple Authorized Reseller on or after April 12 for a shipping and handling fee of $9.95.
Mac OS X Server 10.4 Tiger will also be available on Friday, April 29. Tiger Server has over 200 new features including native support for 64-bit applications, ideal for high performance computing; iChat Server to deploy secure instant messaging within an organization; Weblog Server that makes it simple to publish and share weblogs (blogs); and Xgrid to make it easy to turn a group of Macs into a virtual supercomputer. "Tiger Server continues Apple's blazing pace of innovation and is the best release of Mac OS X Server yet," said Philip Schiller, Apple's senior vice president of Worldwide Product Marketing. "With no client access fees and over 100 open source projects combined with Apple's legendary ease of use, Tiger Server is the clear choice for all Mac and PC workgroups and an ideal alternative to Windows and Linux servers."
Tiger Server will be available on April 29 at Apple's retail stores and through Apple Authorized Resellers for $499 for a 10-client edition and $999 for an unlimited-client edition. Visitors to the online Apple Store can pre-order copies of Tiger Server beginning today and current subscribers to the Apple Maintenance Program will receive Tiger Server as part of their service agreement. The standard Mac OS Up-To-Date upgrade package is available to all customers who purchase a new Xserve G5 system from Apple or an Apple Authorized Reseller on or after April 12 for $9.95.
